Week 15
Thanksgiving Activities
The kids have enjoyed playing with their Little People Mayflower and Thanksgiving sets this week. We read aloud The Magic Treehouse; Thanksgiving on Thursday. Miriam and Rebekah loved the book and kept begging for one more chapter every time we read it. We also enjoyed several picture books about Thanksgiving and the Pilgrims this week.
Life in a Desert
This week we read about numerous snakes living in deserts and the children made paper plate kangaroo rats. Miriam is still really enjoying listening to Ginger Pye; we're about 1/3 of the way through it. She finished reading aloud Hector Springs Loose this week. It was our favorite read aloud so far; funny and interesting even to Michael!
Miriam completed lessons 7 and 8 in Explode the Code 5. She completed step 4 in All About Spelling 2. She struggled this week to hear the difference in "i" and "e" in the second syllable of some two syllable words; I think the problem is in our southern pronunciation! She also struggled some with syllable division; she spells the words correctly but when she is sounding out the word into syllables she often divides it incorrectly. It seems that the curriculum introduced multiple syllable words without introducing the syllable division rules first. Looking ahead I found that the rules are taught in Step 5, so instead of staying on Step 4 longer we're going to move on to step 5 next week and then regive Step 4's word list to see if it helps her with where to divide the syllables. In Growing with Grammar she learned about pronouns this week.
Rebekah completed lesson 2 and 3 in Explode the Code 1. She also spent a lot of time with the All About Spelling tiles working on words ending in ag, al, an, and ap. The next lesson in ETC begins a new vowel. I think we'll take a week off of ETC to work on "a" words by playing games and using the spelling tiles for one more week.
Math
Miriam was happy to begin using the math balance during our Rightstart time this week. She completed through lesson 48 in Rightstart B. She also completed through page 130 in Singapore 1A.Rebekah enjoyed playing with the math balance this week also. We also spent time doing simple addition with the abacus. She did lessons 29 and 30 in Rightstart A. In BJU K5 she completed through page 39.
Bible
We completed lesson 9 in our Bible Study learning about the Wise Men visiting Jesus and also about King Herod.

Fun! Did you tell them we live in the desert?? ;)
Yes! Read the post below this one; last week Miriam was very worried for your safety and Michael wanted to come visit your house to see the roadrunners.
This week we talked about the Mohave desert and Miriam thought it was so cool that you live in the same place as the kangaroo rat. lol!
Looks like a lot of fun. My husband teaches first grade and his students are always thrilled when he pulls out the balance. LOL.
Have a great Thanksgiving.
