Weekly Report Sept 1-5

Week 2! Whew, I'm tired!!!
Galloping the Globe
This week we concentrated on world explorers and travelling. We read a book about Explorers (well I paraphrased the book as it was difficult to find a book on Miriam's level of understanding) and we found the places on the globe each explorer discovered. We also read several other books about different world travelers both real and fictional and found all the locations they visited on our globe as well. For our project this week the children made apple dumplings after reading How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World.

Reading
This week we made silly sentences by writing the subject on one card in red and the predicates in green on another card. Miriam had a good time mixing up the cards and reading her silly sentences! She's finished all the CVC words in our The Ordinary Parent's Guide To Teaching Reading book and moved on to her first two types of four letter words: those containing double consonants such as ball and toss and those ending in "ck" such as luck and sack! In Explode the Code she reviewed CVC words with a and i, and finished the unit on CVC words with u.

Michael wants to read like big sister Miriam!

Math

Miriam finished lessons 5-8 in her Singapore book this week. She finished up the unit on greater than and less than and then moved on to measurements. First she did several activities about little, medium, and big and then worked on tallest/shortest. Her favorite part of the week was beginning to measure using everyday objects. She measured her book, the table, her shoe, and many other objects using legos, paper clips, and craft sticks.

Science
Our unit this week was on weather-what perfect timing after last week's heavy rain and flooding! Miriam learned about clouds and how they make rain, snow, and hail. She also learned about rainbows, fog, wind, lightening, and thunder. We skipped the subjects of tornadoes and hurricanes for this year-she's way to sensitive for those topics this year.

Bible
This week we read about Noah's Ark, the Tower of Babel, and began talking about Abraham. We didn't learn a Bible verse this week-instead we are working on memorizing our address and will continue the same memory work next week as Miriam is still working on our zip code.

Spanish
This week we learned to count to 10 in Spanish.

Art
Miriam looked at a cave painting in her Come Look With Me: Animals in Art book. She was not very impressed and didn't quite understand that long ago people didn't have the supplies to do a better job than that.

Music
Music was the highlight of Miriam's week; she really enjoyed her music and movement class. Her favorite part was playing games with the parachute. She can't wait for next Tuesday so that she can go to class again!

Handwriting
This week Miriam practiced the letters o, a, c, and d. It turns out that she loves to practice her handwriting because each page has a picture of an animal to color. Each day she carefully colors the animal after practicing writing her letter and puts the picture in her "Animal Alphabet" book.

Preschool
This picture is a sample of the many, many worksheets Rebekah completed this week. She was very into "doing" school this week; instead of getting down to play after a few minutes of work she stayed at the table most days just as long as Miriam. She enjoyed beginning to color pictures to make her own animal sounds book. She really surprised me with how quickly her fine motor skills are progressing just by doing a little work everyday. She's still not ready to form letters, but she is drawing shapes and doing a very, very good job cutting on the lines and pasting. She's also having fun doing "follow the directions" worksheets; I ran out of print-offs several times during the week as she begged for more work to do. She knows the names of all the shapes-though I never taught her that!

Looks like a wonderful, fun week. I am doing Galloping the Globe with my 2 youngest.
Isn't How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World a fun book? We did that book twice with Five In A Row-it was such fun.
Love all of your weekly pictures!
