Weeks 13 and 14
Christmas
The last 2 weeks we've been reading Christmas stories from other countries out of The Kingfisher Book of Classic Christmas Stories. The girls are coloring Dover's Christmas Around the World and learning about Christmas customs in other countries. We also read The Nutcracker before going to see the ballet last week.
France
We read a beautiful French Christmas legend, Old Pierre's Christmas Visitors. I was crying by the end of the story and could barely get the last few paragraphs out. This is a story to read every year to remind ourselves that Jesus wants us to help those in need around us.
We learned how shoes are filled with presents instead of stockings.
Germany
We read The Elves and the Shoemaker and learned about the origins of the Christmas tree and about St. Nicholas' Day.
Mexico
We read The Legend of the Poinsettia.
Italy
We read Befana and the Three Wise Men.Reading
Miriam is learning about long vowel sounds. She completed lessons 69-73 in The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading and lessons 1 and 3 in Explode the Code 3. Miriam is reading every Dr. Seuss book that she can find- I hope Santa brings her a few new books to work on! She read Green Eggs and Ham from cover to cover this week only asking for help on about 5 words! She is also working through the Little Bear series.
Math
Miriam completed all 7 exercises of lesson 2 in Singapore 1A. She also did a lot of manipulative and abacus work on number bonds for reinforcement.
Science
Bible
Last week we finished reading about King David's rule of Israel and began reading about King Solomon. This week we've been reading picture books about Jesus' birth as well as other stories about Christmas topics.

There's a stack of Dr. Seuss books over here at our house. Maybe you can get Miriam some more from here to work on. I also have them some new Christmas books for their library.
