Language Arts
We finished our read aloud Night Fairy this week. The girls both love the book and have been pretending to be fairies all week long.Miriam--
Miriam has completed through lesson 6 in Explode the Code book 7. She began Rod and Staff 2nd grade grammar and has completed through Unit 1 Lesson 9. She's using Write Source (2nd grade) for writing and enjoyed writing and editing a short story this week. For reading comprehension she has completed 3 stories in her Bob Jones 3rd grade reading book and workbook. During independent reading time she has completed the first 3 Boxcar children books and several Magic Treehouse books.
Rebekah--
Rebekah restarted Explode the Code 1 and has completed the first lesson. Phonics seems to finally be clicking with her and she's flown through to lesson 39 in The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading. She went from learning and relearning short 'a' words over and over again for the past 6 months to flying through short a, e, i, and o in two weeks! She is still struggling with b, d, and p as well as the difference in j and g. Her attention span is short, so I've learned to keep her reading to about 5 sentences of text and one workbook page a day so that she doesn't get discouraged or frustrated.
She's also really working hard on her handwriting, but still turns many letters and numbers backwards.
Math
Miriam finished working on measurement and also learned about adding doubles in Bob Jones Math 1.
Rebekah finished learning numbers to 35 in Bob Jones K and was relieved to move on to simple addition. She has trouble reading and writing numerals though she has a good grasp of them orally. Page after page of two digit numerals was getting quite tedious for her. Addition is much more fun!History
We are using Story of the World 1 for history this year. We've completed through chapter 3, learning about archaeology, nomads and the first Egyptians. Miriam really loves doing mapwork each day. The kids all loved writing their names in cuneiform on clay tablets this week. We watched a Magic Schoolbus episode about archaeology. They also love reading The Good Time Travel Agency series and the other picture books we've borrowed from the library.

Science
We took about 20 tadpoles from a friend's pool two weeks ago in hopes that we could watch them grow into frogs. We read many books from the library, but unfortunately all our tadpoles died in less than a week. The kids were quite sad, but are hoping to try again next year.
Our science this year is coming from Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding (K-2). We discussed organization and categorization last week.
This week we began learning about matter. The children loved separating objects into solids, liquids, and gases and watching several related videos on Discovery Streaming.

Bible
Miriam and I are studying Genesis to Ruth using Classical Academic Press' material. I was looking for a Bible study that was a true Bible study that would have Miriam reading and learning from a real Bible rather than cute stories or devotional/character material. This is the only curriculum decision I'm not happy with for this year though. I think the material is wonderful, but I think she'd get a lot more out of it in a year or so. I'm going to do another week or two and then make a decision.Spanish
We are studying Spanish using lessons from Discovery Streaming. We've already done the first three lessons learning about where we live, our family, and the rooms in our house. The girls love this program and ask everyday if they can watch another Spanish video!
